Cartridge Heaters

The ruggedly constructed, high watt density, Hi-Temp Cartridge heaters have a swaged construction to minimise airgaps and provide excellent heat transfer efficiency (typically 90 to 95 watts per square inch, depending on the application).

This type of construction improves reliability and enables the cartridge to withstand internal temperatures up to 870^oC (1600^oF).

Based on the Hi-Temp Cartridge heater, the cartridge immersion heaters have been designed for prolonged immersion in oil or water and can be supplied in a wide range of bushing formats. These heaters can be supplied with a thermocouple fitted if required. The immersion cartridge heaters are ideal for when a tubular style heater is too large for the application.

Based on the Hi-Temp Cartridge heater, the finned cartridge heaters have been designed for air heating applications and can be supplied in a wide range of termination formats. These heaters can be supplied with a thermocouple fitted if required.

Based on the Hi-Temp Cartridge heater, the square heaters have been designed use in applications where channels are the prefered method for maximum heater transfer to the load.

Hole size

As a general guideline, we recommend that the hole in which to fit a Hi-Temp cartridge is a reamed hole of diameter equal to the nominal diameter of the cartridge.

Ordering Information

To order any cartridge heater, please provide the following details: Diameter, Length, Wattage, Voltage, Lead Length, Lead Style.

For right angle cable entry, give insert and overall length.

Installation

Use recommended maximum watt density range to avoid excessive watt densities which result in the internal overheating of the heater.

When heater requirements demand excessive watt densities, contact Fast Heat for recommendations. Special heaters can be designed for these applications.

Contamination of heater, both on leads and internally, is serious and results in rapid failure. Care should be taken to keep possible carbonising agents, such as oil and low temperature tapes, away from heater. In cases where this is not possible, use catalogue recommended seals or contact Fast Heat for assistance.

Lead failure due to excessice flexing can be decreased or halted by utilising special lead arrangements shown below. For further assistance contact Fast Heat.

Thermal expansion and contraction due to cycling shortens heater life. We recommend reducing watt densities by 20% for those heaters subject to frequent cycling.

Also, be sure the full heated length is in contact with the metal to avoid burn-out by operating in air. The use of Infrakote thermal paste is recommended.

Thermocouple Cartridges

Bottom Grounded
Thermocouple grounded to outer sheath for fast response.
The end slug is always welded in place.
Type J (I/C) or K (C/A) thermocouples available.

Centre Grounded
Thermocouple grounded to outer sheath for fast response.
The thermocouple location is midway along the length with approximately 6.4 mm (1/4”) cold section on either side of the junction.
Type J (I/C) or K (C/A) thermocouples available.

Other Terminations

BSP Bushing
Hex head B.S.P. bushing attached.
Must specify: overall length, insert length and bushing material.
Bushing material types: Brass (BB), Stainless Steel (SS).
